When the Swans Asked Their Young to Leave
This was one of the most emotional nature moments I have ever witnessed.
I felt a wave of excitement when I discovered the swan family again. Seeing them together on the water always brought a sense of calm, and I expected this morning to be no different. But after only a few minutes of filming, it began to dawn on me that this was not just another quiet morning with the swans.
Something had changed.
As I continued observing, I began noticing subtle shifts between the adults and their growing juvenile. What first appeared to be small movements and reactions soon revealed itself as something far more important — a natural moment in the life of a swan family.
Once I returned home, I spent some time researching what I had witnessed. As the next breeding season approaches, adult swans begin encouraging their juvenile to move on and establish its own territory. The young swan must eventually leave so the adults can begin preparing for a new nesting season. But that moment of separation is not always peaceful.
The juvenile is not always ready to go — and that is exactly what I had observed, filmed, and photographed.
As the scene unfolded in front of me, my emotions were all over the place. At one point I even felt tears forming as it became clearer what was happening. Watching the adults push their young away reminded me so much of the human experience — parents helping a child move forward into their own life.
Humans experience the moment emotionally…
but for the swans it is instinct and survival.
Yet in nature, this moment is not driven by emotion in the same way it is for us.
For the swans, it is instinct.
