Spring Time at The Pond

Spring is a time of new beginnings in nature.

Making my way around the pond, wagon in tow, I watched the silence of winter give way to the beautiful sounds of spring. Migration brings new life to the area as many birds travel north. Millions make their journey during the nighttime hours, flying mile after mile beneath the stars. Scientists even ask us to turn off unnecessary lights during migration season so these travelers can navigate safely.

One of the surest signs that spring had arrived at the pond

As I heard the different songs and calls around the pond, I often searched for their source, not always finding the birds themselves. The most obvious signs of spring were the ducks and their young. Tiny ducklings carefully followed their parents through the water and along the shoreline, staying close as they learned to avoid predators.

Spring brought new life to every corner of the pond

As the trees and shrubs began to bloom, it seemed almost overnight that finding wildlife became more challenging. The new leaves provided cover, hiding many of the pond's newest visitors from view. Some species had chosen this place as their summer home, while others would continue their journey north.

Still, there was no mistaking it.

Spring had arrived.
